Sublimate Mugs in a Convection or Craft Oven

For oven sublimation mug blanks, the heat surrounds the mug, bringing the sublimation and blank to the correct required temperature. The oven doesn’t apply pressure. Sublimation shrink wrap contracts when heated, holding the transfer paper against the coated surface. That is what helps prevent any gaps that cause your design to be faded, blurry, or incomplete.
The exception for this method of sublimation on mugs is that it’s better to have a dedicated craft oven. You don’t want to prepare food in the same space you’re doing sublimation so there isn’t any cross-contamination.
Which Method Fits You Best?
The method you’ll use largely depends on time. An oven is better if you want more flexibility with mugs of different sizes or have a bunch of blanks to process at the same time. If you’re working with standard mug sizes and prefer speed, go with the mug press.

How to Sublimate a Mug in a Craft Oven
To give you a solid foundation in mug sublimation, this workflow is for an oven. For example, if you’re using the xTool WonderPress with the Craft Oven Module. It’s a good step-by-step guide for working with convection ovens, but not for a strict mug press.
Step 1: Prepare and Print Your Design
Before anything, you want to design your artwork in a compatible software program. When you have that perfect quote, photo from a recent trip, or logo you want, resize it to fit the printable area on your specific sublimation mug blank.
Trim away any unnecessary paper so it doesn’t interfere with the wrapping process. Print the mirrored design onto sublimation paper using sublimation ink compatible with your printer.
Step 2: Position and Secure the Transfer
When you have a good-sized image, you can place the printed side directly against the coated mug.
Smooth out the paper so it doesn’t have air bubbles and is tight against the mug’s surface. You want to secure this using heat-resistant tape so it doesn’t move around during sublimation. If you can, keep some space between the design and the mug’s handle. Our recommendation is at least 25 mm from the handle. Anything too close might disrupt uniform contact and make heating a bit more challenging.

Step 3: Apply the Sublimation Shrink Wrap
Now you need sublimation shrink wrap, or something similar that can handle the heat. Secure that tightly against the mug. It will contract during heating, but you’ll still want close contact along the curved surface. Anything too loose can end with faded or incomplete designs.

A small trick you can use during this stage is to apply a heat gun to the shrink wrap to pre-contract it for a tighter fit. And keep the heat gun moving to avoid melting or tearing the wrap.
Step 4: Select the Oven Settings
For the Craft Oven Module, you can select “Baking Sublimation” mode and choose the material preset or custom settings you want. For other convection ovens or craft ovens, you should follow the specific instructions on the blank, as settings can differ between types or between the front and back heating stages.
In the proven WonderPress test, a good setting would be to heat the Craft Oven Module to 210°C to bake for 950 seconds. After that, rotate the mug 180 degrees and bake for an additional 600 seconds at the same temperature.

Step 5: Heat the Mug
Place the heat insulation pad and sealing frame as instructed when using the Craft Oven Module. For a conventional craft oven, position the wrapped mug according to the oven and blank manufacturer’s instructions, and allow the oven to reach the target temperature before starting. Beginning before the oven is fully preheated can lead to uneven or incomplete transfer.
Step 6: Rotate When Required
Rotating the mug during sublimation helps. Different heating stages may be outlined in the blank’s manufacturer details. For the WonderPress, you rotate the mug after the first heating stage, then change the settings for the second heating stage.
Always, always, always use heat-resistant gloves when handling any kind of hot mug. The point is to get even heating and pressure for the best image transfer.

It is extremely satisfying to carefully remove the mug. Place it on a heat-resistant surface and follow the specific instructions for the mug sublimation temperature and cooling time. Once you’ve hit that stage, you can safely remove the shrink wrap and paper. Try to avoid shifting the transfer too much especially when the mug is still hot, so you don’t get any “ghosting” of the image.

- Ghosting (blurry image): The transfer has shifted. You may need to re-tape the paper and make sure nothing is moving during the process.
- Uneven Sublimation: The wrap is loose, or the heating is uneven. Review your placement and be sure to follow the rotation guidelines.
- Brown Colors: If you get scorching, you’ve likely used too much heat or time. Follow the instructions from the blank.
