From Wood to Metal: How One Business Idea Brought Our Shop $8,000 in a Month

by Kate Pan Updated on August 25, 2026

Business Snapshot

  • New Revenue Stream: Personalized sports medal boards generated more than $8,000 in sales in one month.
  • Margin Gain: Metal products delivered 30–40% higher margins than comparable wood products.
  • Production Efficiency: Two sets of complex 11-gauge stainless steel signs were cut from a 24 × 24-inch sheet in about 8 minutes.

My name is Steve Smith. Before my wife and I started our small design and fabrication shop, I worked in finance. We built our business around personalized wooden products, but I could see that metal signs offered higher prices and new opportunities that wood alone could not reach.

The ideas were there. The equipment was not. Professional CNC plasma cutters costing upward of $100,000 made metal fabrication feel like a market reserved for much larger businesses.

I wanted to enter that market without making an industrial-scale investment. This is the story of how the xTool MetalFab helped us move from wood into premium metal products and how one sports medal board idea grew into more than $8,000 in sales in a single month.

When Our Wood Business Hit Its Growth Ceiling

Wood gave us a strong starting point.

My wife and I could create personalized products, adapt designs for individual customers and turn names, dates and personal details into something people could display or give as gifts.

But running a small business also means recognizing when your existing products and tools are beginning to limit your next stage of growth.

I knew moving into metalworking could open a higher-value product category. A custom metal sign had a different weight, finish and sense of permanence than a comparable wooden piece. It could reach customers looking for premium wedding décor, sports displays, family signs and personalized gifts.

The opportunity was clear, but we could not produce those products with our existing setup.

The problem was not a shortage of business ideas. It was that some of our best ideas required a production capability we did not yet have.

We had reached a point where creativity alone was no longer enough to move the business forward.

The $100,000 Barrier to Entering Metal Fabrication

Professional metal fabrication seemed to belong to large industrial shops.

The CNC plasma cutters I associated with that level of work could cost more than $100,000. A machine like that also required the space and supporting equipment of a much larger operation.

For a husband-and-wife business testing a new product category, the investment was difficult to justify.

Outsourcing the metalwork would have created another set of limitations. Our products are highly personalized, so names, dates, mascots and layouts change from one order to the next. Relying on an outside supplier would make it harder to adjust a design, test an idea or profitably fulfill smaller custom orders.

The challenge was finding metal fabrication tools for a small shop that matched our budget, available space and actual production needs.

That was the frustrating part. I could see a premium market that matched our design skills, but the traditional ways of entering it did not fit the size or budget of our business.

I did not just need another cutter. I needed a breakthrough in both capability and affordability.

How MetalFab Turned a Metal Business Idea Into a Product Line

The xTool MetalFab gave us a practical way to bring precision metal cutting into the shop we already had.

We did not need to abandon our existing business or become a traditional industrial fabricator. Instead, we could apply what we already knew about design and personalization to a higher-value material.

Cutting is one of the core processes in metal fabrication, but the ability to handle fine details was especially important for our products. Names, dates, narrow lettering and decorative patterns all need to remain clean and recognizable after cutting.

"To be able to have a machine of this size... and to be able to do that kind of precision cutting is pretty phenomenal," says Steve, adding that it bridges the gap between a small shop and a big industrial facility.

For the first time, the metal business ideas we had been considering no longer had to remain concepts. We could make the products ourselves, put them in front of customers and learn which ideas had real market potential.

MetalFab did not hand us a ready-made business. It gave us the missing capability to build one.

The Sports Medal Board That Generated $8,000 in One Month

The product that proved the opportunity most clearly was a personalized sports medal board.

Each board begins with a precision-cut metal base. We customize it with an athlete’s name, school, sport, jersey number and graduation year. Rows built into the lower section provide a place to display the medals earned over a season or several years.

We then combine the metal base with UV-printed graphics, adding a full-color school or team mascot.

The same product format can be adapted for soccer, baseball, track, football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball and cheer. The basic construction stays consistent, but the visible details make each board personal to one athlete.

That combination made it a strong small-business product.

We did not have to start from zero for every order, yet customers were not receiving something generic. We could repeat the workflow while still creating a product connected to a specific name, school and accomplishment.

In one month, the sports medal board line generated more than $8,000 in sales.

That figure represents revenue rather than profit, and it does not guarantee that every new product will produce the same result. For us, however, it was an important moment.

Metal was no longer simply a category we hoped to enter. We had found a product customers wanted and a way to produce it inside our own shop.

The barrier that had kept us outside the premium metal market was finally beginning to come down.

Eight-Minute Production and 30–40% Higher Margins

Finding a promising product was only part of success. We also needed a workflow that could support it.

With the MetalFab, it takes about eight minutes to cut two sets of complex 11-gauge stainless steel signs from a 24 × 24-inch sheet.

That production speed allows us to think beyond occasional experimental pieces. We can develop repeatable product lines, personalize them for individual customers and handle multiple parts within the same workflow.

The move into metal also changed the economics of our shop.

Our metal products have delivered margins around 30–40% higher than comparable wooden products. One personalized brass wedding sign, for example, sells for $180.

Customers are not paying more simply because the product is made from metal. They are paying for the material, precision and personalization working together: the names in a wedding sign, the school identity on a medal board or the intricate details in a family piece.

We have also used the same cutting capability to create personalized soccer displays and decorative metal wall art for weddings and family occasions. These products give us several potential customer niches instead of making the business dependent on one successful idea.

Based on the premium pricing and sales we have seen, I expect MetalFab to pay for itself before the end of the year. For other small shops evaluating a similar investment, machine price is only one part of the calculation; order volume, product margins and work brought in-house all influence the expected cost and ROI.

The return does not come from owning a machine. It comes from using that machine to create the right products for the right customers.

From a Small Workshop to a Business Built to Grow

My wife and I still operate a small design and fabrication shop. We did not become an industrial factory overnight, and that was never our goal.

What changed was the scale of the opportunity we could realistically pursue.

Before MetalFab, detailed metal products felt like a category reserved for businesses with much larger budgets and facilities. I could see the demand and imagine the products, but I did not have an affordable way to make them.

Now, we can cut those products in our own shop. We can test new business ideas, personalize them for individual customers and build repeatable product lines around the ones that gain traction.

One of those ideas generated more than $8,000 in sales in a month. Our metal products can deliver higher margins than wood. And based on our current results, the machine is on track to pay for itself within the year.

Those numbers matter because they show that the move into metal is supporting real business growth.

But they also represent something more personal. We no longer have to look at a promising product and stop at the question of whether our shop is large enough to make it.

MetalFab bridges the gap between a small workshop and a large industrial facility. For us, crossing that gap did not mean leaving the business we had built behind.

It meant finally giving that business room to grow.

We already had creativity and product ideas. What we needed was the capability to take them further.
