How to Polish Aluminum Step by Step

Dry the material completely and inspect it under bright light from different angles. Be on the lookout for any scratches, oxidation, pitting, machining lines, coatings, and/or damaged edges.
You want to know if you’re working with bare, anodized, painted, or coated aluminum before you sand. If it’s bare aluminum with a smooth surface, try testing some polish on a small area first. You might not need to sand that piece.

- For machine buffing: Secure the part and make overlapping passes. Don’t hold the wheel in one place too long. If you change compounds, use separate clean pads or wheels. You’ll start to see the sanding haze get gradually brighter and more reflective.
- For hand polishing: Use a compatible aluminum compound and follow any instructions on the packaging. You typically use a soft, microfiber cloth and work section by section. Rub the cloth over a small section using overlapping circular or back-and-forth motions. Keep working until you start to see a brighter finish, then wipe away the residue with a different clean cloth.
You should start to see a reflection forming on the surface. If any scratches come through, you may need to go back a few steps to sand them out before continuing to buff.
Step 7: Polish the Aluminum to a Bright or Mirror Finish
